HMS Victory stands today as the world's oldest commissioned warship. Still manned by
Officers and Ratings of the Royal Navy, the Victory has seen over 200 years of almost continuous service. Built in 1765 at Chatham Dockyard and costing £63,000 (equivalent to £50,000,000 today) to construct she was the fifth ship to bear the name Victory.
HMS Victory lead an active career and is best known for her role in the 1805 Battle of
Trafalgar in which Lord Nelson won a famous victory but was mortally wounded by a
musket ball fired by the French.
Today
HMS Victory currently has a dual role as
the flagship of the Second Sea Lord and as a living museum to the Georgian navy.
